Chapter 21

“I’m engaged!” I shouted into Isaac’s cell phone.

Isaac pulled my left hand up toward his lips and kissed the finger that now bore my engagement ring as he pulled out of the Disneyland parking lot.

“She’s engaged!” Mom yelled so loudly I had to move the phone away from my ear.

“Isaac finally got smart, huh?” I heard Dad say.

Then I heard Cammie ask, “Did she like the Sleeping Beauty thing?”

I answered all of their questions and told them I’d call back later. They were all so happy for Isaac and me.

Next I called Carrie. She cried, which made me cry, which made Isaac reach for a Kleenex in the glove compartment and almost crash into the lit brake lights of a Chevy Impala in front of us.

Thirty minutes later we pulled into the parking lot of a fancy Italian restaurant called Severino’s.

“What are we doing here?” I asked.

“We’re having an engagement party.” Isaac put the car in park and unbuckled his seatbelt.

I looked at him with narrowed eyes. “You must have been pretty confident I’d say yes.”

Isaac shrugged. “If you hadn’t, I would have changed the party to a console Isaac party.”

I grinned as Isaac swung open his door and the two of us walked into the restaurant.

“Congratulations!”

The ten-seat table in the back of Severino’s was halfway filled with people. I recognized Doreen and Dennis, and after Isaac and I sat down and were handed our menus, Isaac introduced me to the others.

To our right were Isaac’s Aunt Margaret and Uncle Wayne, who, he said were the resident genealogists in the family,

“It’s nice to finally meet you, Annabelle,” Margaret said, touching the bun in her hair that was secured with an antique clip. “Isaac says your last name is Pleasanton?”

“Yes.”

“We actually have some Pleasantons in our bloodline. Wouldn’t that be funny if you and Isaac were distantly related?”

Um. No. “Well—”

“That’s Grandma Malette,” Isaac interrupted, pointing to the spunky-looking gray haired woman who was seated next to Margaret and Wayne. “You’re going to love her.”

“I’ll take a half-diet, half-regular,” Malette was saying to the waiter in a commanding, gravelly voice. Then without missing a beat she said to Isaac, “Get over here and hug your grandmother.”

Isaac motioned for me to follow him as he went to Malette’s seat. He gave her a hug and then introduced me.

“She’s pretty,” Malette said to Isaac. “How’d you get a girl this pretty?”

“I was looking for someone just like you, grandma.”

“Save it,” Malette said. “I know I look like an old raisin. Luckily, my eye sight’s so bad; I look in the mirror and see Marilyn Monroe.”

“I think you look great,” I said.

Malette frowned at me. “You don’t have to kiss up to me, sweetheart.”

I felt my cheeks burn.

“We’re here,” I heard a voice say from behind us.

I looked toward the voice and saw the woman I had seen with the little fairy at Disneyland approaching with a thin man in rimless eyeglasses. I now noticed the woman looked like a younger, blonder version of Doreen.
